Mary Francis Gibbons
Faculty Awardee

Faculty awardee Mary Frances Gibbons taught English at Richland College for more than 30 years. She was an early advocate for teaching composition and technical writing courses using computers so that students would be prepared to write effectively in the 21st century.  She was often called on by the college to revise institutional documents for clarity and conciseness.

She led the QEP efforts for RLC during the SACS reaffirmation of accreditation process, and she edited the Certificate of Compliance materials and designed the CD-ROM that RLC submitted for the off-site visit. She helped to bring contributions from several sources for Restart, a program for adult minorities who had dropped out of high school.

In retirement, Mary Frances has helped other community colleges learn more about the new SACS processes and serves as a consultant for the SACS consulting network. During the Hurricane Katrina disaster, she worked at the Salvation Army Distribution Center. She is a longstanding member of her church’s prayer chain.
